Nastya was born on January 24, 2002. The delivery was difficult, and birth injuries later worsened her existing conditions. She was born with a cleft palate, a heart condition, low birth weight (2 kg), brain edema, and other pathologies.
Only at the age of two was a rare genetic diagnosis established — Wolf–Hirschhorn syndrome (mortality in the first two years of life can reach up to 35%). In Latvia, Nastya was the only child with this diagnosis, and there was no experience in treating such children.
The first years of her life felt like “a leap into the unknown.” But, thank God, Nastya turned out to be a strong girl. Over time, epileptic seizures stopped, the cleft palate defect was surgically corrected, heart surgery was not required, and a therapeutic diet was selected. She learned to stand with support, became physically stronger, and her immune system improved as well. Nastya is a very cheerful and life-loving girl. She enjoys прогулки (especially by the sea) and loves animals (horses, dogs). Dolphin therapy makes her happy and helps her develop new communication skills. Nastya uses a wheelchair for mobility.
I am raising my daughter alone. We had to move to a crisis center due to the father’s aggression when Nastya was diagnosed.
Minimal child support was provided until she reached adulthood. We continue to cope, addressing everyday challenges related to rehabilitation, housing, guardianship, and transportation.
We are together 24/7. Over the years, due to injuries and heavy physical strain, I was assigned a disability (Group 3), and surgery on my knees is now being considered. Still, I remain patient and keep going. At times, burnout and fatigue are strongly felt, especially after the pandemic, and without a reliable caregiver — we have no grandparents to help.
But Nastya has taught me to appreciate the little things. Despite everything, life is a beautiful gift — especially when there is a chance to watch sunrises and sunsets, hear the sound of the waves, birds singing, and breathe the fresh air of the sea and forest. Unfortunately, such moments are rare in our lives. I have almost forgotten what a carefree rest feels like.
Our dream is to one day visit Cyprus — this beautiful, warm place with a wonderful climate.
With great respect and hope for a miracle,
Yanina and Nastya Koloskovy
